Hernán Cortés to the New World
Hernán Cortés first traveled to the "New World" in 1504 and he landed in what is today Haiti. At the time it was Hispaniola. Ovando was still the governor there and, impressed with Cortés' work, made him a notary for one of the villages there.
Not satisfied, Cortés later made the voyage to Cuba with some others including a Diego Valazquez. Together they managed to take over Cuba in 1511 and Cortés was rewarded with land and slaves for his contribution as leader to the voyage.
Throughout the remainder of Cortés' time in Cuba, relationships became strained between Valasquez and Cortés. There were riches within the land as well as women at stake so Valasquez, still holding the position of governor, sent Cortés away on an expedition to Mexico in 1518. What was supposed to rip Cortés from his power and possibly life actually led to his becoming famous.
